The Rules for Hearts was a quick read, but the plot and characters haven't really stayed with me. I'm generally a fan of "quiet novels," but this one just didn't have enough meat in terms of character evolution and interesting language.

I did like, though, that the setting was something I hadn't seen in YA before/5. Rules for Hearts and millions of other books are available for Amazon Kindle. Enter your mobile number or email address below and we'll send you a link to download the free Kindle App.

Nick ran away when Battle was in high school, and four years later, he’s tracked her down. At the end of each hand, count the number of hearts each player has taken, as well as the Black Maria. Hearts are 1 point each; the Black Maria is 13 points. If one player has won all 13 hearts and the Black Maria (this is known as shooting the moon), that player can choose to subtract 26 points from his or her score or to add 26 points to every other player's score.

- Hearts are worth 1 point each. - The queen of spades is worth 13 points. - All other cards are 0 points. - Shooting the moon: If a player holds every heart card and the queen of spades, they get a score of 0, and every other player gets 26 points.

- Points are tallied for the group when one player reaches Each heart - 1 point The Q - 13 points The aggregate total of all scores for each hand must be a multiple of The game is usually played to points (some play to 50).

When a player takes all 13 hearts and the queen of spades in one hand, instead of losing 26 points, that player scores zero and each of his opponents score an additional 26 points.

If a player doesn't follow the suit even though he is able, he isn't penalized if he corrects his mistake before the trick is completed.

If a revoke isn't corrected in time, and is discovered before the deal has been scored, the "offender" is charged for all the hearts in that deal and no other player receives any penalty points.

This is a somewhat-popular variant of the regular Hearts. All standard rules apply as usual, the only difference being that all hearts are now worth their number face value instead of one point apiece (Jack, Queen, King, and Ace of Hearts bec 12, 13, and 14 points apiece, respectively).

The Queen of Spades is still valued at 13 points. Hearts cannot be led until they’ve been broken, that is, thrown into a previous trick by a player who couldn’t follow suit. When a player equals or breaks points, the game is over, and the player with the lowest score at that time is the winner.
